ron smith teenie bikini remixron smith teenie bikini 1Perhaps not the most well-known version of the song Itsy Witsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, but this one from Ron Smith has a cover that desperately needs a remix. And what a remix. The bikini on the babe on the new cover is so itsy bitsy and teenie weenie that all the polka dots have become invisible. The bikini itself is only just visible in this dimension. Surely the modern version of what Mr Smith (and others like him) thought about when they sang the song?

These Boots Are Made For Walkin' - Nancy Sinatra

nancy sinatra these boots rnancy sinatra these boots aName someone who doesn't know that These Boots Are Made For Walkin'. Because that's just what they'll do. One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you. Nancy Sinatra's 1966 classic has a cover which ain't too shabby. But with the addition of a little modern twist, the boots become much more the kind of thing that is suited to walkin' all over you. Spikey, to boot!

Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf

steppenwolf born wild remixsteppenwolf born wild 1Even today the phrase, "Get your motor running" is well known. Few realize that this 1968 song from rock band Steppenwolf is where it comes from. That's probably because the cover is awful. The more important question is, does the girl on the remixed cover look like she was Born To Be Wild? She is naked and lying on a chair. Did you hear, she is naked! Born to be naked? Let's hope she's wild with it.

Kinky Boots - Patrick MacNee And Honor Blackman

kinky boots 2kinky boots 1This (and tomorrow's remixed album art) were submitted by Harold Binthwaite of England. Apparently, this was a 1960s song by two stars of the Avengers (the British version of Charlie's Angels), Patrick MacNee (Charlie) and Honor Blackman (insert random name of an angel here). Kinky Boots languished in the mists of time until it was made popular on a national radio station in the 1990s. Gosh, so thrilling, as they say in London.

Venus - The Shocking Blue

the shocking blue venus 1Very little dating back to the 1960s retains any feel of modernness in today's fast changing society. That being the case, it is refreshing to find a female lead singer whose attire and style still looks as funky and sexy as it did nearly 50 years ago. The lead singer of Shocking Blue who are best known for this 1969 single Venus is called Mariska Veres. Mr Veres (who is from Holland) looks rather cute in an Emo kind of way on the cover of the single. The same cannot be said for the other members of the band who look as dated as anyone in any pictures from the era. The rest of the cover is, well, blue, which is kind of to be expected. What it is not, in any way, is shocking.

the shocking blue venus remixNot only does Ms Veres look sexy on the original cover, but in this remixed cover she looks even sexier. The remixed cover would have no doubt been shocking in the 1960s, except perhaps in Holland where nudity and blue movies appeared to be quite normal, or at least that is the impression that you get from anyone who has ever been to Amsterdam. It is good to have been able to remix this cover with the original artists intact, but to have added something new - in this case the shocking element. As for the Venusian element, that will have to remain untapped for now but there is always the possibility of a remixed remix of the cover of the single in the future.

Chapel Of Love - The Dixie Cups

dixie cups chapel of love 1We're goin' to the chapel and we're, gonna get ma-a-a-ried. Is that so? Well in 1964 that's what The Dixie Cups were singing in their song Chapel Of Love. Here at AllBum.Art it's true to say that there have been quite a few songs about weddings that have featured as cover art remixes, and this one will add to that collection. In the original cover we see what exactly? Some cups (Dixie ones perhaps) and what appear to be miniature mannequins of a bride and groom, the kind that normally sit on top of a wedding cake. All things considered, not that bad as covers go as it features cups and a wedding theme. But that doesn't mean it can't be improved upon.

dixie cups chapel of love remixWhat was missing from the original cover has been included in this remixed version. Gone are the paper cups and in their place, three ladies. One of them is meant to be a bride and the other two her bridesmaids. Are they goin' to a chapel? No, they are in a hotel by the looks of things. Are they goin' to get ma-a-a-ried? Well if they did that would make them both lesbians (as they are all girls) and bigamists (as there are more than two of them). That being said, they do appear to be very friendly, perhaps more friendly than just the bride/bridesmaid relationship might suggest. Maybe they are in New York to take advantage of that state's liberal laws on these things. Anyone fancy joining them?

My Boy Lollipop - Millie

millie my boy lollipop 1One of those 1960s songs that seems to have stood the test of time, My Boy Lollipop sees the sickly sweet voice of Millie singing lots of lyrics that revolve around glucose based confectionary. The cover of the single, on the other hand, does not offer us any insight into this world of candy-coated love. Instead we see Millie herself against a blue background. The choice of blue is odd, as it's probably one of the least common colors for candy and being an upbeat, happy-go-pappy kind of song the connection of the color blue with its regular connotation of melancholy does nothing to lift this rather sour, dour cover out of the blues.

millie my boy lollipop remixIn the remixed cover, many of the problems of the earlier cover have been fixed. There is one minor point, and that is that Millie has been replaced by an alternative lady, but given the alternative lady's state of dress (or undress) it is unlikely that this would cause too many complaints. What is great about the remixed cover is that the new cover-girl is sucking on a lollipop. And not just any lollipop but a bright red one. Maybe strawberry flavored, or raspberry, or cranberry or redcurrent. What the flavor is matters little, but the dash of red inflames the senses and cheers up this otherwise dull blue cover, revealing much more of the sugary, giddy-up nature of the song itself. In fact it's much more revealing in many ways.

Summer Holiday - Cliff Richard

cliff richard summer hoilday 1Another fanmade cover for us to showcase. This time from Tim Marshall of Nottingham, England... We're all going on a summer holiday, or at least that's what Cliff Richard has us repeating everytime the sun comes out. This cover from the 1963 single (and film of the same name) has Mr Richard standing on a beach, and he appears to be singing. Is he on holiday? Unlikely, because if he was, the chances are he wouldn't be standing singing whilst someone took his picture. Is it summer? Difficult to tell, but let's give Mr Richard the benefit of the doubt on that. Are we all going with him? No. Nice try Mr Richard but a better lure is required to convince the world to go on a summer holiday to wherever it is you were at the time.

cliff richard summer holiday remixWhat is little know about the beaches in British holiday resorts in the 1960s is that they were rife with nudists. In fact, during the summer months, the whole British coastline was one great big nudist camp. This is one of the reasons that the foreign holiday business began to grow as reserved families were forced to take their children overseas to get away from the views of danging male gonads that flapped about wherever you looked. It was probably this propensity for nakedness that makes Mr Richard's song so cheerful and why he is so upbeat about going on a summer holiday. In the remixed cover we see a typical photograph taken on a British beach in the 1960s. It's just a shame that the scorn poured by other countries on British humor such as Benny Hill as forced the country to revise its laws so that nudity on British beaches no longer produces endless pictures of this calibre.

Thanks Tim, keep those remixes coming.

Baby It's Cold Outside - Various Artists
Saturday, 22 December, 2012, 12:03 - Singles Released Before 1960, Singles Of The 1960s, Singles Of The 2000s, Christmas Crackers

baby its cold outside 1A seasonal classic, written as long ago as 1944, Baby It's Cold Outside has been performed and recorded by a long string of artists most notably:
  • Margaret Whiting and Johnny Mercer (1949)
  • Dean Martin (1959)
  • Ray Charles and Betty Carter (1961)
  • Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey (2004)
Very few pieces of original album art exist (and some versions were only released on compilation albums) and so this 'knitted sweater' design has been used as the basis for a re-work of this chilly tune.

Click for the full-size image [600px by 600px].

baby its cold outside 2The revised version stays with the knitted sweater idea but instead of a cosy 'warm inside' version, this one is most definitely 'cold outside'. The lady in the picture appears to be wearing nothing but a furry hat but is thankfully protected from the harsh chill of the cold by a furry jacket that she appears to be sitting on. How she got into this predicament, heavens only knows but presumably if she felt the cold she wouldn't have got like this in the first place. She can always put the furry jacket back on again, though without any trousers or other garments, it is unlikely to provide sufficient warmth. Perhaps her charming looks have an exothermic reaction with the surrounding snow. Or maybe not.

Blue Christmas - Elvis Presley
Thursday, 20 December, 2012, 12:12 - Singles Of The 1960s, Christmas Crackers

elvis presley blue christmaMr Elvis Presley and his 1964 single Blue (hoo hoo) Christmas is another of those seasonal songs that can be heard across the country on the radio at this time of year, being close to Christmas (though being more grey and white than blue). The cover here is from a re-release and is not the original, but it does see Mr Presley in a nice christmassy sweater looking kind of blue. What is most unlikely, is that Mr Presley would be on his own at Christmas, especially if he was feeling blue, and so it only seems right that we should give him someone to feel blue about, blue with or whatever else takes his fancy.

elvis presley blue christm2Ah, a happier Mr Presley now as we find that all along there was someone there with him. In fact she seems quite the pretty one with her red corset with white fur trim, her red underwear and her white stockings. In that outfit, she almost seems Canadian what with the regulation red bra with white fur lining. Perhaps she is Canadian: just because Mr Presley lived in the south, doesn't mean he would necessarily turn someone away just because they came from northern climes, does it? She does look less suntanned than Mr Presley, a bit pale some might say. Then again, perhaps he liked that kind of thing.
