smashing pumpkins bullet 1What a relief to return to the land of the free to do some work on this 1995 single from The Smashing Pumpkins. Bullet With Butterfly Wings was widely acclaimed for its musicianship. But what about that cover? Where to begin? Where, for one, is any connection to the band itself? Second, there seems to be on connection whatsoever to a bullet of any kind (only in your wildest imagination could, perhaps, the rip in the page have been caused by a bullet but the cut is so clean and symetrical that it is highly unlikely). Lastly, where's the butterfly? Overall the cover scores 0 out of 10, even if the song is a rock classic.

smashing pumpkins bullet remixLike many songs it is both likely and possible that there is a likelihood of the possibility of the name of the song and it's awful cover, being a metaphor for something else. Like a rabbit with a headache or something. But analyzing it further is not going to produce any sense so instead the cover has been replaced by a naked girl wearing butterfly wings. Why? Well, it stems from the fact that the title has the word butterfly in it mostly. That, and the fact that the naked girl is very cute and would look great on the cover of any single (whether that be a single song or a single guy). That obvious enough for you?

Angels - Robbie Williams

robbie williams angels 1No. Sorry. Don't understand a word of it. The e-mail that arrived with this remixed cover comes from, apparently, someone calling themself Tabbo of Manchester in England. Tabbo says he knows about this site and then says:
Youze aarn't fekk'n doddlin' it reet.

Aarn't it indeed? Well rather than leave you with the rest of Tabbo's musings on Mr William's and his cover, instead the original is presented here for your reference. According to Tabbo:
Hezz fekk'n twat haircut is shite.

robbie williams angels remixWhat a relief to find that Tabbo's work on remixing the cover in the AllBum.Art style has yielded something that is both a vast improvement over the original picture of Mr Williams, but is also comprehensible. Given the rest of the 'tripe' spoken by Tabbo, you might have expected his remixed single cover for Angels to have been some drug crazed nonsense. But instead it shows two picturesque angels. It is often said that drugs brings out the best in people, at least by drug addicts if no-one else. Though not even Tabbo would be bold enough to make that statement. He can have the last word:
Themz fekk'n birds is bang-up dolly-mix

Whatever that means...

Angel Of Harlem - U2

u2 angel of harlem 1Ah, 1988, what a year. It was the year that came before 1989 and the year that came after 1987. And even more interestingly, it was the year that U2 released the single Angel Of Harlem. What many people do not recognize is that if you take all of the letters in Angel Of Harlem, and add them together (using their position in the alphabet as a number), then square this number, it doesn't add up to 1988. The subliminal message in the song comes from this cover which, on the face of it, is incredibly boring. What on earth were they thinking about. Since when has a bored looking guy sat around in morbid black and white had anything to do with either angels or Harlem. Maybe that's the point. Or maybe there isn't a point.

u2 angel of harlem remixWhat this cover needs is a damned good, yes damned good, remix. Harlem is one of those up-and-coming aspirational districts where stuff is happening. So let's make the cover aspirational and up-and-coming. Gone is the bored looking guy, and in his place is a hot looking angel. What's it got to do with U2. Nothing particularly but does that really matter. Surely Bono and his buddies would approve of this angel who, it has to be said, if she had been on the original cover, would probably have catapulted this single from the obscurity of number 14 in the hot 100, to the dizzy heights of number 12, or even number 11.

(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!) - Beastie Boys

beastie boys fight for your right 1Kick It! No, that is not a reference to the bucket which Beastie Boy Adam Yauch sadly kicked in 2012, but is the now infamous opening line from the Beastie Boys classic 1986 single (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!) The very 1980s cover (in the sense that it's a very over everything, over cluttered, over colorful and over complicated) carries the name of the band, the title of the song and a picture of the Beastie Boys looking, well, very 80s. It's probably the hats and the sunglasses that do it, because it doesn't appear to be raining (hence no need for a hat), nor does it appear to be overly sunny (hence no need for the glasses) and so the band are over dressed, adding to the overly nature of the whole cover.

Click for the full-size image [600px by 600px].

beastie boys fight for yourright remixYou should never speak ill of the dead, but we thing Mr Yauch would forgive the replacement of his picture with one that better sums up the whole track. Instead of the picture of the 'Boys, we instead see a couple of girls who are clearly fighting hard. It is only this extreme level of fighting that could possibly be appropriate if the outcome of the battle was the right to party. Never mind human rights, or constitutional rights, the right to party is something that should be a universal human norm, and should not require any fight. But if you are going to fight, make two girls do it in the nude, that's the best way by far. In fact, it almost represents a party in itself, so in a way, no matter who wins, at least they will both have had a party.

I Kissed A Girl - Katy Perry

katy perry i kissed a girl 1What a can of worms is opened up by Katy Perry in her 2008 song I Kissed A Girl. Not since the blatant lesbianism in the video for All The Things She Said by Russian teen group t.A.T.u. has the subject of girl on girl love made it to the Hot 100. Ms Perry's take on the issue is simply that the fact that the girl she kissed had put cherry flavoured chapstic on her lips made it alright. It is true though, is it not, that if someone has put chapstic on their lips, either it is a cold winter's day or they have sore lips, or both. So it may not have been such a good move and it's difficult to see how the cherry flavor would have made the whole situation anything less than awkward.

Click for the full-size image [600px by 600px].

katy perry i kissed a girl remixWhat is lacking from the artwork for the original cover of the single is any evidence that this kissing of girls has taken place. Ms Perry is standing alone. In the remixed cover, a shot from a scene where such kissing has taken place (quite feasibly for the very first time) has become the backdrop. Two girls, taking a tentative kiss at a crowded party are shown. Whether either of them is using a chapstic or other wax based lip protectant is not evidenced from the picture. Nor is there any obvious evidence that either girl liked it, though there is evidence that they probably like each other, and that the party has been going for quite some time as they appear to have stripped from their waists upwards.

Venus - The Shocking Blue

the shocking blue venus 1Very little dating back to the 1960s retains any feel of modernness in today's fast changing society. That being the case, it is refreshing to find a female lead singer whose attire and style still looks as funky and sexy as it did nearly 50 years ago. The lead singer of Shocking Blue who are best known for this 1969 single Venus is called Mariska Veres. Mr Veres (who is from Holland) looks rather cute in an Emo kind of way on the cover of the single. The same cannot be said for the other members of the band who look as dated as anyone in any pictures from the era. The rest of the cover is, well, blue, which is kind of to be expected. What it is not, in any way, is shocking.

Click for the full-size image [600px by 600px].

the shocking blue venus remixNot only does Ms Veres look sexy on the original cover, but in this remixed cover she looks even sexier. The remixed cover would have no doubt been shocking in the 1960s, except perhaps in Holland where nudity and blue movies appeared to be quite normal, or at least that is the impression that you get from anyone who has ever been to Amsterdam. It is good to have been able to remix this cover with the original artists intact, but to have added something new - in this case the shocking element. As for the Venusian element, that will have to remain untapped for now but there is always the possibility of a remixed remix of the cover of the single in the future.

I'm So Excited - The Pointer Sisters

pointer sisters so excited 1I'm So Excited is the 1982 single from The Pointer Sisters. Although it dates to 1982, it's style has a lot in common with the 1970s disco sounds, the covers of which have formed a bit of a theme over the past few days here at AllBum.Art. But Oh, what a dull, dull, dull (did someone say dull) cover. It has yellow. It has blue. It has some words. It does not have any evidence of The Pointer Sisters. It does not show any propensity for excitement. It is a cover for the sake of covers, to protect the inwardly protected single from dust. To protect the grooves on the vinyl from the ingress of dirt. To stop the single getting mucky.

Click for the full-size image [600px by 600px].

pointer sisters so excited remixBut getting mucky is what a song such as I'm So Excited screams out for on it's cover. What it needs is sisters (in the widest sense of the word, rather than necessarily the clinical one) who are not just excited, but just can't hide it. They need to be about to lose control, and they need to think they like it. The girl in the centre of this remixed cover fits that description to a penny. The look on her face says more than the song needs to. It has blue, yes. It has some words, yes. It shows some sisters, oh yes. It shows a propensity for immediate excitement, definitely. As for protecting the grooves, it does that too. A clear and unequivocal improvement, darn tootin'.

AWB - Average White Band
Wednesday, 6 February, 2013, 05:39 - Albums Of The 1970s

average white band 1Another of those funky disco bands from the 1970s, the Average White Band really hit the pits when all they could come up with for the name of an album was AWB. And the cover of the album is even less inventive. It just comprises the name of the band, together with their logo. One thing of merit, if anything, is that their logo replaces the letter 'W' with what is obviously meant to be the curvy rear view of a naked lady. Unfortunately, the lady has her back turned so that we cannot see any more of her. That, and the fact that the lady in question has been drawn with a pencil makes the whole thing very lacking in anything but pit hit shit.

Click for the full-size image [600px by 600px].

average white band remixHow simple it is to remix the album art and return it to the kind of glory that should have shone through in the first place. All that is required is the re-addition of the original female using photographic reproduction rather than a pencil drawing done by a drunken Canadian teenager. As this remixed cover shows, the lady in question fits perfectly within the curves of the 'W' and although her back is still turned, and she is facing away from the camera, the sense of sexiness is massively enhanced from the original. Now AWB no longer stands for Average White Band, but shouts 'Ass With Bumnificence' or maybe just 'AWsome Bum'.

Yes Sir, I Can Boogie - Baccara
Tuesday, 5 February, 2013, 05:29 - Singles Of The 1970s

baccara yes sir 1Those halcyon disco days of the 1970s provide an almost inexhaustible supply of single covers that verge on the sexy but don't quite make it. This cover from Baccara's 1976 single Yes Sir, I Can Boogie shows the two singers from the band standing next to each other. In true doesn't-quite-make-it fashion, they are wearing relatively skimpy matching black and white dresses which fall down over their bodies in just the wrong way to allow any of the underlying shape to be seen. A secondary failure of this cover is that they are not boogying but just standing around looking almost sexy. A poor attempt that could have been sexified with just a little of extra thought, and a little less material.

Click for the full-size image [600px by 600px].

baccara yes sir remixThe remixed cover deals with some of these failures. Gone are the two original 70's honeys, replaced by two alternative ladies from roughly the same era whose idea of dancewear, whilst remaining largely monochrome, is rather different in it's make-up (as is their make-up too). Overall, the amount of material in their outfits is probably not a lot different, but it is shaped and placed in such a way as to reveal the underlying shape of the wearer. And it seems as if the girl on the right is having trouble as the girl on the left appears to be having to hold her dress in place. Surely Sir could do that for them, in return for a boogie?

Erotica - Madonna

erotica madonna 1Another cover taken from the time when Ms Ciccone was publicly into getting naughty. This is the cover from Madonna's 1992 album Erotica which was published alongside a book called Sex. The book contained many photos of Ms Ciccone in many states of dress and undress. The album cover on the other hand, does not. That being said, the fact that the cover of the album only shows the facial features of Ms Ciccone is not conclusive evidence that she is wearing clothes, but neither is it a dead cert that she is. The pictures in the book left no such question unanswered and included a picture of Ms Ciccone hitch-hiking naked on a busy city street.

Click for the full-size image [600px by 600px].

erotica madonna remixIt only seems right that the remixed version of this cover should replay this particular photograph from Ms Ciccone's book Sex. And here she is, standing at the edge of a road, wearing nothing but a pair of heels (and a handbag) and sticking her thumb out to request some passing motorist to give her a lift. The concept of naked hitch-hiking is not unique to Ms Ciccone. It has been said that it is by far one of the best ways to ensure that a girl gets the lift that she desires. It has been known to cause problems though, both by distracting drivers who drive past, as well as causing extreme distraction to the driver who eventually gives the girl a lift. So shame on you Ms Ciccone for promoting such potentially dangerous activities.
